The big yellow Gourmet cookbook is one of my go-tos for weekend dinner planning. Now the entire contents of Ruth Reichl's culinary bible are on a free iPhone app—one that makes shopping lists for you.
It's great—you either search for recipes you already know (from the pages of Gourmet, Bon Appetit and a bunch of other Conde Nast-y pubs), or you browse the featured dishes—25,000 in all, including cocktails too. Once you've settled on a recipe, click the plus button to add it to your favorites, or better yet to your shopping list. Add all kinds of recipes to the shopping list, and it organizes all of their ingredients for you in a logical way for shopping: Produce, Meat & Poultry, Condiments, Canned Items, and so on. Already have salt? Just clear that bastard off the list and move on.
There are two things I don’t particularly like: For one, you can’t adjust the size of your recipe. You can’t even add it twice, as if to double it. You can add as many recipes, but you can’t double one.
The other thing I don’t like is that it’s hard to browse subcategories. I select “Side” from the Meal/Course browse menu, fine. I get 4364 results. I type in “rice” and it’s whittled down to 490. Are these going to be the same basic set every time, in the same order? Maybe searching “rice” and “cashews” or something might whittle it down more, but there should be some middle ground, a randomizer, or like one of those other iPhone apps, a place to list all that you have in the fridge, so that it can suggest a dish. Maybe it’s there, or coming soon. I’ll keep looking, because it’s free, and I already love it. [iTunes link via Wired]

MVC (via MacRumors) is claiming that Microsoft’s head of Xbox Business Insights and Strategy, Richard Teversham, is leaving to join Apple.
With the unbelievable success of iPhone and iPod touch gaming, could Apple finally be taking the space seriously? Or could this be part of some bigger move, one involving those chipset buyouts, licenses, and hires we recapped earlier? Could Apple be working on…
… A Pippin Take 2?
Yeah, more likely iPhone, maybe iTablet, maybe even Mac gaming, but that next gen hardware power might just give the consoles a run for their money anyway…

Microsoft Head of Xbox BI and Strategy Leaving for… Apple?

Business Week (via Daring Fireball) is adding fuel to the rumors of Apple’s iPhone 3.0 may not only be shooting video come WWDC, but editing and sharing as well:
I’ve spoken with a source that is familiar with Apple’s plans for the next iPhone, which may well be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in early June. Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip, the ingenious device made by Pure Digital (recently purchased by Cisco). Then there’s an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself. There may also be support for MMS, so the clips can be shared wirelessly with friends. And because of the iPhone’s relatively large screen, your friends don’t have to schlep to your PC or their Facebook page to see that video of your kids or your safari. Just hand them your iPhone.
Questing — will this only be available on the next generation iPhone or will current (and older) iPhones be so blessed, lower-quality camera and processors not withstanding?

iPhone to Become One Stop Video Production Shop?
So. Funny. Maybe the Audio Book industry was right to be worried, but for the wrong reason. With the iPhone rumored to be getting voice control in 3.0, how long will it be before we get to see our signature device turn up as Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction… or doing it’s own into at Macworld 2007! The comedy potential is limitless, we tell you, limitless.
Once you’ve had your fill with Pod Vader, be sure to check out the Wrath of Kindle and iBlade Runner.

Your best source for information about Swine Flu might be Swine Flu Tracker, currently awaiting approval by Apple for release in the App Store.
IntuApps has put together a detailed mashup of freely available information about the deadly Swine Flu and packaged it into an iPhone app, which will be offered for free when it is released, according to Techcrunch.
This app has virtually everything you’d want to know about the disease. There’s the current threat level (currently at 5) as defined by the World Health Organization:
A map of flu cases with updated information coming through a Google Maps RSS feed:
Symptoms and information about the disease:
And alerts which have been culled from the Twitter feeds of the WHO, Centers for Disease Control and HealthMap:
Intuapp’s Barry Schwartz has a write up on his blog (where all these screenshots came from) providing a glimpse of how they were able to pull this information together to deliver an iPhone app in such a short period of time.
I’m not so concerned by the Swine Flu (yet) that I need an app to follow its development, but I don’t speak for everyone. Let us know in the comments if you’ll be installing this app when it goes live.
